Year of Establishment : 1968

History of the department : The Department of Applied Chemistry was established in the year 1922.The Department of Applied Chemistry started offering three-year B.Tech degree in Plastics and Rubber technology from 1968. The Department of Applied Chemistry was trifurcated to three separate departments, i.e., Department of Chemical Engineering, Department of Chemical Technology and Department of Plastics and Rubber Technology in 1982. The name of the department was changed to Department of Polymer Science and Technology in the year 1997

Research

Research scholars : Presently we have several full time research scholars along with research scholars working under the supervision of our departmental faculties working in other Universities/institutes/R& D research laboratories in joint collaboration. Thrust areas in teaching and research of the academic department :

Teaching - Polymer Science & Technology including polymer chemistry, kinetics, polymer physics, polymer processing, related areas of chemical engineering like mass transfer, fluid flow, reaction kinetics, thermodynamics and new areas of polymer science and technology,

Research - Polymer composites, nano composites, compound design, polymer gels, conducting polymers, polymer membranes , separation technologies, waste treatment, bio sensor, removal of heavy metal ions and dyes and arsenic using novel technologies, etc

Teaching support : The air conditioned class rooms are well equipped with the facilities of power point presentation extensively used by most of the faculties with free wifi facilities for downloading relevant ebooks, literatures , lecture files (pdf) of eminent scientists working on similar field, machine operations (video files), etc.

Research support : The department is well equipped with various processing instruments/equipments such as injection molding, compression molding, blow molding , 2 roll mill, rheometer, DMA, XRD, DSC, FTIR, DLS, etc details of which are available in www.pstcu.in. These apart, the individual faculties have their own equipments /instruments procured from their own research projects.

Major activities : Every three- year interval the department conducts a reunion comprising alumni meet, national seminars on emerging areas of Polymer Science & Technology and cultural activities by the students. The department also regularly conduct international seminar, workshop, industrial visit of the students, etc,. Most of the students get job from campus interviews while few students opt for M.Tech. in other institutes including IITs and also in their own departments. Some students also appear in GRE for doing research in abroad.
