Year of Establishment : 1916
History of the department : The first appointed teachers were D.M. Bose as the Rashbehary Ghose Professor and C.V. Raman as the Taraknath Palit Professor. These appointments were made in 1914. Bose went to Germany and came back to join the Department in 1919. Raman joined in 1917, preceded by two other teachers in 1916, when the M.Sc. classes started.
