University of Calcutta (informally known as Calcutta University or CU) is a collegiate public state university located in Kolkata, West Bengal, India.&nbsp;Within India it is recognized as a &quot;Five-Star University&quot; and accredited &quot;A&quot; Grade by National Assessment and Accreditation Council.

The University of Calcutta has secured the Fifth position among the Universities of India in the prestigious &quot;Indian University Ranking 2019&quot; list, released by the NIRF of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India.

&nbsp;

It was established on 24 January 1857, and was one of the first institutions in Asia to be established as a multidisciplinary and Western-style university. Its alumni and faculty include several heads of state, heads of government, social reformers, prominent artists, only academy award winner and Dirac medal winner in India, many Fellows of the Royal Society and five Nobel laureates as of 2019 which is highest in South Asia.

Assessment of Social Vulnerability in Malaga Province, Spain: A Comparison of Indicator Standardization Techniques

Flood is common in the sub-Himalayan plains of the Indian state of Bihar. During the massive flood of the Ganga between 18 and 31 August 2016, 15 (out of 38) districts and 3459 villages of the state were affected. The flood inundated 6006 km2 of area, harmed 8.82 million people, and caused damages worth US$ 73.99 million. To investigate the factors behind the event, we utilised SRTM elevation data and Landsat-8 OLI images to extract drainage networks and reservoirs of the region. Inundated area was delineated using MNDWI on MODIS data of 25-Aug-2016. Different hydrometeorological parameters employed in the study include percentage departure of monthly rainfall, discharge data of selected dams and barrages, and gauge data from six stations along a 526 km stretch of the Ganga: Buxar, Gandhi Ghat (Patna), Hathidah, Munger, Kahalgaon, and Manikchak Ghat. It was found that the flood was mainly caused by rapid release of water from the Bansagar Dam on the Son from 18 to 20-Aug-2016, as a tropical storm traversed through its upper catchment. Contributions from the Ganga’s Himalayan tributaries and upstream of the flooded area were negligible. The flood peak (50.52 m), recorded at Gandhi Ghat on 21 August 2016, passed downstream, and reached Manikchak Ghat (25.78 m) on 27–28 August 2016. The upstream extension of flooding due to the highest recorded flood level of 26.66 m of the Ganga at Farakka can only reach up to 6 km above Kahalgaon. Therefore, impoundment of the Ganga by the Farakka Barrage cannot have any impact on inundation of the areas above that limit and did not cause the 2016 floods. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature B.V. part of Springer Nature.

The 2016 flood of Bihar, India: an analysis of its causes

Malnutrition is a global phenomenon in general and India is no exception. Present study was conducted to determine the prevalence of undernutrition among the Santal children of Ajodhya Gram Panchayat of Purulia district of West Bengal, India. Here, quality of life of the households of the studied research participants is also investigated to understand the role of quality of life in the prevalence of undernutrition. A total number of 307 children aged in between 5–10 years were evaluated using the standard anthropometric techniques, such as height-for-age, weight-for-age and body mass index for-age to determine the prevalence of stunting, wasting and underweight conditions of the Santal tribal children. The nutritional status index of children and the quality of life index of those children’s households have also been calculated to perceive the relation between these two indices. A cluster analysis has also been performed to see the similarity in terms of nutritional level among the children across the mouzas of Ajodhya Gram Panchayat. The prevalence of stunting, wasting and underweight among the children is found to be 27.69%, 36.81% and 44.63% respectively. The overall prevalence of undernutrition is recorded 58.31%. The nutritional status index is calculated to be 0.488 (moderate) for children, while the quality of life index for households is computed as 0.199 (very poor). The study reveals the occurrence of undernutrition among children is closely associated with poor quality of life of households of Ajodhya. The chi-square tests indicate that no statistically significant variation (p < 0.05) in the prevalence of undernutrition in between male and female children, and among the different age groups is observed. © 2021, Korean Spatial Information Society.

This study analyzes the spatio-temporal patterns of urban growth for the Kolkata Urban Agglomeration (KUA) in eastern India using dynamic spatial territorial extents and compares the results with existing popular hypotheses of urbanization patterns (diffusion-coalescence and three-growth-mode). Time series neighborhood-level built-up densities were extracted and overlain to identify two broad urban spatial extents, inner and outer, which were further categorized into sub-territorial units. Landscape metrics and mode-wise urban growth statistics were computed for the above spatial extents. Results reveal a marked increase in the urban land share, from 20 % in 2000 to nearly 50 % in 2018, when about 75 % of the built-up spaces comprised the high-density urban core. Urban growth patterns in KUA show clear intra-urban variations between inner and outer spatial extents. The inner city zone underwent coalescence with nearly 90 % of the built-up growth within inner city extents occurring through infilling, whereas the outer extents showed complex growth patterns with outlying growth dropping by almost 27 % points, with related increase in both infilling (11 % points) and edge-expansion (16 % points). Diffusion and coalescence occurred simultaneously, but at varying intensities within the different sub-territorial units. Examining such complex spatiality of urbanization is crucial to reduce its adverse environmental effects and promote sustainable urban growth. © 2021 Elsevier Ltd
