Year of Establishment : 1920 (Erstwhile Dept. of Applied Chemistry was Trifurcated into three departments in 1982, of which Dept. of Chemical Engineering emerged)
History of the department :The University of Calcutta is a pioneering institute in introducing post-graduate studies in Applied Science in 1920s. At the initiative of the great educationist, Sir Asutosh Mukhopadhyay and Sir P.C.Roy, the department of Applied Chemistry came into existence in 1920 along with sister Technology departments. Professor H.K.Sen became the first professor and Head of the department of Applied Chemistry.
The Department of Applied Chemistry started offering degrees in Chemical Engineering in the year 1977 with intake of 40 and 20 for B. Tech & M. Tech programs respectively.
The present Department of Chemical Engineering was emerged from the parent department in the year 1980 with the above 2 programs. In the year 2000, the intake for M. Tech. program was increased to 25. The degrees offered by the department are duly accredited by the AICTE and approved by UGC.
Recently the Department has started to take 20 students from WBJEE and 20 from B.Sc as lateral entry in the second year.

The vision of the Department is to be a nationally and internationally recognized school of Chemical Engineers by producing competent practicing chemical engineers as well as dedicated academicians for the service of the society and humankind.
The Department aims at serving the nation and the society by following the vision of the Faculty of Engineering & Technology keeping in view the motto advancement of learning of the University of Calcutta.
