University of Calcutta (informally known as Calcutta University or CU) is a collegiate public state university located in Kolkata, West Bengal, India.&nbsp;Within India it is recognized as a &quot;Five-Star University&quot; and accredited &quot;A&quot; Grade by National Assessment and Accreditation Council.

The University of Calcutta has secured the Fifth position among the Universities of India in the prestigious &quot;Indian University Ranking 2019&quot; list, released by the NIRF of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India.

It was established on 24 January 1857, and was one of the first institutions in Asia to be established as a multidisciplinary and Western-style university. Its alumni and faculty include several heads of state, heads of government, social reformers, prominent artists, only academy award winner and Dirac medal winner in India, many Fellows of the Royal Society and five Nobel laureates as of 2019 which is highest in South Asia.

Inward‐looking policies, finite change and employment: The capital reallocation effect

Introduction This book introduces econometric analysis of cross section, time series and panel data with the application of statistical software. It serves as a basic text for those who wish to learn and apply econometric analysis in empirical research. The level of presentation is as simple as possible to make it useful for undergraduates as well as graduate students. It contains several examples with real data and Stata programmes and interpretation of the results. While discussing the statistical tools needed to understand empirical economic research, the book attempts to provide a balance between theory and applied research. Various concepts and techniques of econometric analysis are supported by carefully developed examples with the use of statistical software package, Stata 15.1, and assumes that the reader is somewhat familiar with the Strata software. The topics covered in this book are divided into four parts. Part I discusses introductory econometric methods for data analysis that economists and other social scientists use to estimate the economic and social relationships, and to test hypotheses about them, using real-world data. There are five chapters in this part covering the data management issues, details of linear regression models, the related problems due to violation of the classical assumptions. Part II discusses some advanced topics used frequently in empirical research with cross section data. In its three chapters, this part includes some specific problems of regression analysis. Part III deals with time series econometric analysis. It covers intensively both the univariate and multivariate time series econometric models and their applications with software programming in six chapters. Part IV takes care of panel data analysis in four chapters. Different aspects of fixed effects and random effects are discussed here. Panel data analysis has been extended by taking dynamic panel data models which are most suitable for macroeconomic research. An examination and defence of heterodox approach

The extent of wage penalty between workers in permanent and temporary jobs at different locations of the wage distribution is examined by evaluating the impact of workers' characteristics and education. The differential effects of the covariates on wage gap at different locations of the wage distribution are estimated by applying the quantile regression model. After estimating the differential effects, the relevance of the glass ceiling or sticky floor hypothesis has been tested with Indian data. The wage gap between temporary and permanent employment is decomposed into the endowment effect based on the difference in labour market characteristics and coefficient effect based on the difference in returns for the same characteristics. © 2019 Economic and Political Weekly. We examine the welfare consequences of foreign direct investment (FDI) flows and credit market reform in a small open developing economy using a 2 × 2 full-employment general equilibrium model with both labour market and capital market distortions. Apart from factor market imperfections, there is a tariff on the import-competing sector, which creates commodity market distortion. We find that either of the two policies can lead to welfare improvement under reasonable conditions. Subsequently, using a two-sector, specific factor Harris-Todaro type mode; like that of Beladi and Naqvi (1988), we have verified the robustness of the result that have earlier obtained in the full-employment case. We have found that although the effects of FDI flows on both welfare and urban unemployment are ambiguous, credit market reform unequivocally improves welfare and mitigates the unemployment problem. Considering both the cases together, it might be concluded that as a policy, credit market reform is distinctly superior relative to investment reform. The results could be useful for policymaking in a developing economy like India where multiple distortions coexist. © 2019 Elsevier Inc.

Foreign direct investment and credit market reform in a developing economy: Could these be alternative policies?

Effective contract enforcement is the key for the formation and expansion of business enterprises. Contract enforcement which comes under the purview of the judicial system forms an important constituent of the formal institutional framework. In this paper, we aim to address the question whether better functioning formal judiciary institutions facilitate business in a less-developed country where entrepreneurs often take recourse to informal networks rather than approach formal courts for enforcing contracts. More specifically, we are empirically estimating this relationship between efficiency of formal institutions and various indicators of business performance by utilizing a unique administrative data collected from the judicial authority. We merge this data with the survey of medium- and small-scale industries to find the effect of several court efficiency measures such as duration rate and congestion rate on different business performance indicators.We find that improved court efficiency help entrepreneurs across the board, but the impacts are stronger for disadvantaged groups such as scheduled castes and tribes. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2019, corrected publication 2019.
