University of Calcutta (informally known as Calcutta University or CU) is a collegiate public state university located in Kolkata, West Bengal, India.&nbsp;Within India it is recognized as a &quot;Five-Star University&quot; and accredited &quot;A&quot; Grade by National Assessment and Accreditation Council.

The University of Calcutta has secured the Fifth position among the Universities of India in the prestigious &quot;Indian University Ranking 2019&quot; list, released by the NIRF of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India.

&nbsp;

It was established on 24 January 1857, and was one of the first institutions in Asia to be established as a multidisciplinary and Western-style university. Its alumni and faculty include several heads of state, heads of government, social reformers, prominent artists, only academy award winner and Dirac medal winner in India, many Fellows of the Royal Society and five Nobel laureates as of 2019 which is highest in South Asia.

We provide a theoretical explanation why agricultural subsidy policies are likely to fail to ensure simultaneous eradication of the incidence of child labour and improvement in the well-being of the poor working families in terms of a three-sector general equilibrium model with child labour and agricultural dualism. We identify both demand and supply side effects of any policy intervention on child labour. We also suggest two alternative policies, a scheme of direct cash transfer to poor people and economic growth through foreign direct investment (FDI), both of which would be effective in achieving these twin objectives of a welfare government. © 2014 University of Venice.

This paper delves into the complex relationship between health trade through international fragmentation and health trade through commercial presence. A neo-classical full employment four sector static general equilibrium model has been developed, where the three sectors produce final products except the health intermediate goods producing sector. The paper shows that expansion of health trade through commercial presence implies, under some reasonable conditions, enhancement of the volume of health trade through international fragmentation. It also shows that the composite volume of trade in health services through international fragmentation and commercial presence increases the size of the health care in our stylised small open economy. © 2014 The Pakistan Development Review.

FDI and Unemployment

A three-sector, three-factor general equilibrium model is developed for a small open developing economy where an inflow of foreign capital generates externalities in the presence of a non-traded final commodity. There are two types of capital and the efficiency of labor depends positively on the consumption of the non-traded commodity. Effects of inflows of foreign capital on social welfare and human capital formation are examined. The analysis finds that while capital that is used in all the sectors may improve welfare, capital used specifically in the non-traded sector is likely to affect social welfare adversely. These results, which hold for a wide range of parameter values, can at least question the desirability of allowing entry of foreign capital in the non-traded final good sector that emanates externalities.
