University of Calcutta (informally known as Calcutta University or CU) is a collegiate public state university located in Kolkata, West Bengal, India.&nbsp;Within India it is recognized as a &quot;Five-Star University&quot; and accredited &quot;A&quot; Grade by National Assessment and Accreditation Council.

The University of Calcutta has secured the Fifth position among the Universities of India in the prestigious &quot;Indian University Ranking 2019&quot; list, released by the NIRF of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India.

&nbsp;

It was established on 24 January 1857, and was one of the first institutions in Asia to be established as a multidisciplinary and Western-style university. Its alumni and faculty include several heads of state, heads of government, social reformers, prominent artists, only academy award winner and Dirac medal winner in India, many Fellows of the Royal Society and five Nobel laureates as of 2019 which is highest in South Asia.

This paper argues that better prospect for exports induces firms to distinguish between high-quality workers and low-quality workers by providing an incentive wage. Thus, trade leads to an identification of labour quality, widening the wage gap between the high-quality (skilled) and the low-quality (unskilled) workers. The results are derived in a model containing both moral hazard and adverse selection problems. We provide a different argument from the ones as available in the existing literature including the standard Shapiro and Stiglitz (1984) shirking model. Finally, the results of the paper have some important policy implications. © 2017 Elsevier Inc.

International trade and quality of labour

At the eve of independence, it was a daunting task before Nehru to frame a suitable policy of governance for the North-Eastern states hitherto separated from the colonial administrative mainstream. With the continuous pursuance of protective and proactive role by the government of India, the growth scenario of the North-Eastern states has turned out to be near satisfactory. The per-capita income has been on the rise at a moderate rate, income inequality and inter-states disparities are also declining. However, the worrying factor is that growth is discernible where government intervenes as principal economic actor. Size of labour market has failed to respond positively due to absence of credible manufacturing sector, limited volume of trade and commerce, transport and communication and banking and insurance. To add further, most of the North-Eastern states have demonstrated very poor fiscal condition despite having enhancing central assistances over time. It is found that the ‘Look East' policy will become the engine of growth and transform the economy North East is illusive in nature and devoid of economic rationale. Alternatively, forging a durable relationship with Bangladesh and bringing time bound solution to immigration problem and water disputes, the road, railways and water transport system through Bangladesh can become much more cost effective and beneficial for the development of economy and to create employment opportunities for North-Eastern states.

Class as Noun: A Critical Examination

The paper develops a three-sector full-employment general equilibrium model for a small open developing economy with exogenous labour market imperfection and a non-traded sector providing healthcare services, the consumption of which generates positive externalities. Our main objective is to show that the optimal consumption subsidy to healthcare, if solely judged from the standpoint of economic growth, is strictly positive (zero) when the production technology of the healthcare sector is of the variable (fixed) coefficient type. However, in the variable coefficient case, the optimal per capita expenditure on healthcare crucially hinges on the degree of labour market imperfection and the quality of services provided by the healthcare sector. The latter result can possibly be considered as a theoretical justification why the magnitude of per capita public spending on healthcare services is significantly lower in the developing countries compared to that in the developed nations. Besides, using the Sen's (1974) index of social welfare that takes into consideration both the growth and income inequality aspects, we have proved that the optimal health subsidy is positive irrespective of the nature of production technology of the healthcare sector. Furthermore, most of these results are found to be valid even in the presence of Harris-Todaro type unemployment. Finally, the results lead to a few important policy implications in the context of the developing countries. © 2017 Elsevier Ltd
