Prof. Sutapa Chaudhuri is the first Indian Scientist to obtain the D.Sc. degree in Atmospheric Science from the University of Calcutta in the year 2014.
After obtaining a Gold Medal in MSc. specializing in Fluid Mechanics from Ranchi University, she obtained her Ph.D. in Boundary Layer Theory with over 9 publications. Upon serving as a Lecturer in Ranchi University where she guided 2 Ph.D. scholars, Prof. Chaudhuri continued her Post-Doctoral research in Bio Fluid Mechanics at IIT Kanpur. She was subsequently selected as Reader through BPSC open selection.
Her scholastic excellence led to Prof. Chaudhuris selection as a Reader in the Centre for Atmospheric Science, Calcutta University and promotion to the rank of Professor in the year 1999. She was the founding co-ordinator of the pioneering Department of Atmospheric Sciences, erstwhile the Centre for Atmospheric Sciences, which till date is the sole Department offering MSc. in Atmospheric Science in the eastern India which was initiated by her continuous fervour. Subsequently with dedicated initiative of Prof. Sutapa Chaudhuri, the Centre of Excellence in Climate Sciences is established in the University of Calcutta in the year 2017. The Centre of excellence is the nodal research Centre for Climate Extremes: Climate Modelling.
In the 25 years of extensive research in Atmospheric Science, Prof. Chaudhuri has published more than hundred research papers in referred peer reviewed Journals and 6 book chapters in the field. She has guided 22 students for Ph.D. degree, 22 students for M. Tech. degree and 155 students for M.Sc. dissertation, undertaken 12 Govt. of India supported Research Projects as Principal Investigator, organised and participated in International and National conferences. She visited foreign countries for invited talk, chairing conference sessions, scientific interactions and became fellow /member of professional bodies and reviewer of reputed International journals.
Precise forecast is one of the intrinsic challenges in meteorology especially in Natural disaster mitigation. Prof. Chaudhuri has pioneered the use of cutting edge technology like artificial intelligence (AI) in the form of soft computing technique and swarm intelligence in extreme weather and climate sciences in India. The innovation of Prof. Chaudhuri in weather and climate studies has not only opened up a new vista in climate science but has paved the way for the next generation researchers.
