In this article, maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) as well as Bayes estimator of traffic intensity (ρ) in an M/M/1/∞ queueing model in equilibrium based on number of customers present in the queue at successive departure epochs have been worked out. Estimates of some functions of ρ which provide measures of effectiveness of the queue have also been derived. Estimation of waiting time distribution in the form of its right tail area, known as exceedance probability is carried out in an M/M/1/FCFS/∞/∞ queue with the help of data consists of non zero waiting time of randomly chosen customer from n independent queues and number of queues with zero waiting time. In the first section, MLE of rate parameters and exceedance probability are obtained and their large sample behaviour is studied. Next section, Bayes estimators of the same parametric function along with the minimum Bayes risks have been derived under squared error loss using McKay's Bivariate Gamma as prior and also independent Gamma as prior with the prior for arrival rate being truncated between 0 and μ. Preservation of IFR and IFRA properties and the nature of dependence among the variables are examined, and a recursive relation is suggested to obtain the resultant density function. The need to develop a tractable failure time distribution that can reflect the bathtub curve of mortality in the sense of having a decreasing failure rate initially, a constant failure rate thereafter and an increasing failure rate at the end, has not yet been satisfactorily met. We define a distribution for which such a bathtub property holds. The proposed distribution covers the exponential, the Rayleigh and a finite range DFR distribution, as particular cases. Two multivariate aging classes described by Johnson and Kotz [7] and Zahedi [11] and known as vector multivariate increasing/decreasing hazard rate (VMIHR/VMDHR) class and decreasing/increasing multivariate mean remaining life of type 2 (DMMRL/IMMRL-2) class, respectively, as well as componentwise NBUE/NWUE class, are considered. The chain of implications between these classes and some characterizing properties of them with regard to the equilibrium distribution corresponding to a multivariate distribution function and concave (convex) transformation of the residual random vector have been established. On some properties of the multivariate aging classes

A queueing model with server vacations is studied in which it is assumed that the interarrivai time has a general distribution, the service-time distribution is exponential and vacations are independently and ^identically distributed with a general distribution. Using the embedded Markov chain technique, the equilibrium probability distributions of system size have been obtained at pre-arrival and at random epochs separately. Gi/m/1 queue with server vacations

Consider an organization with several categories of staff, each having a specified number of members. The age of entry into service and the age of retirement are both specified. Withdrawals occur at time-independent rates. Under this set-up, the authors have computed the maximum ages at which promotions should take place, assuming that the staff members continuing at various ages are random. Characterizations of some bivariate life-distributions

An infinite-server queueing system is studied in which units arrive in batches of variable size following a non-homogeneous compound Poisson process and each unit arriving at time t has its own arbitrary service time distribution. Using the standard properties of the Poisson process and elementary probability arguments, we derive the probability generating functions (PGF) of N(t), the number of units in the system at time t and D(t), the number of service completions up to time t or in the interval (0, t] in the transient state. Covariance functions between N(t), D(t); N(t), R(t), and R(t), D(t) are obtained separately where R(t) represents the number of arrivals in the time interval (0, t]. Expressions are obtained for the mean and variance of N(t) and D(t). Finally, some steady state results are obtained under certain conditions. © 1989.

Ridge estimation of restricted parameters in production techniques

A general ‘successive substitutions’ scheme is developed to estimate parameters in a finite mixture of distributions from the exponential family, based on censored data. Estimation of parameters in finite mixtures of exponential families from censored data

The failure rate of a life time distribution has so far been studied in the time domain. The present paper extends the failure rate transform in the frequency domain. For this purpose, the parent life time distribution has been taken as the Weibull distribution and different properties of the distribution of the failure rate transform have been presented including some characterisations of the Weibull distribution.
