University of Calcutta (informally known as Calcutta University or CU) is a collegiate public state university located in Kolkata, West Bengal, India.&nbsp;Within India it is recognized as a &quot;Five-Star University&quot; and accredited &quot;A&quot; Grade by National Assessment and Accreditation Council.

The University of Calcutta has secured the Fifth position among the Universities of India in the prestigious &quot;Indian University Ranking 2019&quot; list, released by the NIRF of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India.

It was established on 24 January 1857, and was one of the first institutions in Asia to be established as a multidisciplinary and Western-style university. Its alumni and faculty include several heads of state, heads of government, social reformers, prominent artists, only academy award winner and Dirac medal winner in India, many Fellows of the Royal Society and five Nobel laureates as of 2019 which is highest in South Asia.

The preferential form of living for the elderly in India is within the extended family. India is undergoing rapid economic development, an increase in mobility, and changes in gender norms due to an increase in women’s labour force participation, which places challenges on traditional intergenerational relationships. Ageing and the well-being of the elderly is a rising concern, especially considering that their proportion of the population is expected to grow rapidly in coming decades. There is a lack of universal state provision for the elderly’s basic needs, which is especially profound for elderly women, since most do not have an independent income. This leaves the elderly dependent upon the benevolence of their adult children’s families or other relatives. This paper explores, with help of narrative analysis and critical contributions from capability theory, elderly women’s agency freedoms and how this can be contextualised with their varying capability sets. With help of Spivak’s notion of the silent subaltern, the paper anchors elderly women’s abilities to voice to their agency freedom. The master narrative of the silent supportive wife and side-lined mother-in-law as well as three counter-narratives explore alternative agencies taken by elderly women. © 2020 by the authors. Silence or voice? Agency freedom among elderly women living in extended families in urban India

The changes in the activities of three important glycogen metabolising enzymes, viz. glycogen synthetase, glycogen phosphorylase and alpha-D-glucosidase, along with glycogen content have been measured in adult human heart and human fetal heart collected at 13-36 weeks of gestation. At an early period, particularly 13-16 weeks of gestational age, the activity of glycogen synthetase and glycogen content were found to be maximum. However the activity of glycogen phosphorylase remained constant throughout the gestation and that of alpha-D-glucosidase showed a peak at 25-28 weeks of gestation, thereby indicating that fetal heart tissue has the capacity to utilise glycogen for energy.

The ontogeny of glycogen synthetase, glycogen Phosphorylase and α-D-glucosidase, enzymes which are associated with glycogen metabolism and glycogen level has been studied in human fetal testes of gestational age ranging from 14-32 weeks. Glycogen synthetase activity reaches the peak value at 17-20 weeks of gestation, thereafter it decreases. α-D-Glucosidase activity increases with the advancement of pregnancy up to 28 weeks of gestation decreasing thereafter very rapidly. Phosphorylase activity remains more or less constant throughout gestation. The maximum increase in glycogen content at early stages of gestation (17-20 weeks) and gradual reduction with the advancement of pregnancy are correlated with histochemical observation by the periodic acid-Schiff technique. © 1988 Indian Academy of Sciences.

Glycogen metabolism in human fetal testes

The ontogeny of hexokinase, phosphofructokinase, phosphoglucoisornerase, aldolase, pyruvate kinase and lactate dehydrogenase activities which are associated with glycolysis, an important energy yielding process, has been studied in human fetal heart for periods ranging from 13 weeks to above 33 weeks of gestation. Hexokinase, phosphoglucoisomerase and pyruvate kinase activities show similar developmental profiles exhibiting maximum activity at 25-28 weeks ofgestation. Phosphofructokinase activity, on the other hand, shows a minimum at this period and exhibits a peak value at early stages (13-16 weeks of gestation). Though considerable activity for aldolase is observed at an early period, it declines thereafter, but again increases in the later period. The probable role and correlations of these glycolytic enzymes with energy demand and general functional development in human fetal heart in ontogeny are evaluated. © 1985 Indian Academy of Sciences.
