University of Calcutta (informally known as Calcutta University or CU) is a collegiate public state university located in Kolkata, West Bengal, India.&nbsp;Within India it is recognized as a &quot;Five-Star University&quot; and accredited &quot;A&quot; Grade by National Assessment and Accreditation Council.

The University of Calcutta has secured the Fifth position among the Universities of India in the prestigious &quot;Indian University Ranking 2019&quot; list, released by the NIRF of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India.

It was established on 24 January 1857, and was one of the first institutions in Asia to be established as a multidisciplinary and Western-style university. Its alumni and faculty include several heads of state, heads of government, social reformers, prominent artists, only academy award winner and Dirac medal winner in India, many Fellows of the Royal Society and five Nobel laureates as of 2019 which is highest in South Asia.

This is an endeavor to study the plausible causal socio-cultural variable and biological pathways influencing human fertility among the remotely located primitive tribal community of Orissa. The present paper deals with the fertility of 156 Mankirdia women. Efforts are made to study the biological determinants and societal factors affecting fertility. The observation of fertility gives an impression that though the mean age at marriage is low, the average fertility of the women is 3.24. Prolonged breastfeeding and prevalence of widespread traditional contraception methods are identified as responsible factors affecting the fertility of the present population. Hence, trends of fertility need to be monitored regularly and appropriate measures should be taken to raise the status of women. © Serials Publications.

Reproductive Performance of the Bhumija Women: An Empirical Study of a Tribal Village, Baleswar, Orissa

Appropriate antenatal care is important in preventing adverse pregnancy outcomes for both the mother and the baby but many mothers do not receive such care. This paper intends to analyze the reproductive health care practices of the Bhumija women of a tribal village. The new consensus recognizes that an important goal of the reproductive health program is to carry out safe motherhood program. The specific objective of the assessment is to describe the availability, use and quality of maternal care and to identify gaps in the provision of maternal care. This assessment finds substantial gaps between the availability and the reproductive health care practices of the Bhumija women. The findings of the study show that the pregnant women from uneducated background are least likely to receive antenatal checkups and services. The result provides information for development of the national safe motherhood policies and guidelines within a comprehensive reproductive health program.
