University of Calcutta (informally known as Calcutta University or CU) is a collegiate public state university located in Kolkata, West Bengal, India.&nbsp;Within India it is recognized as a &quot;Five-Star University&quot; and accredited &quot;A&quot; Grade by National Assessment and Accreditation Council.

The University of Calcutta has secured the Fifth position among the Universities of India in the prestigious &quot;Indian University Ranking 2019&quot; list, released by the NIRF of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India.

It was established on 24 January 1857, and was one of the first institutions in Asia to be established as a multidisciplinary and Western-style university. Its alumni and faculty include several heads of state, heads of government, social reformers, prominent artists, only academy award winner and Dirac medal winner in India, many Fellows of the Royal Society and five Nobel laureates as of 2019 which is highest in South Asia.

There is a strong political opinion in India in favour of replacing caste based affirmative action with an economic class based one. We contribute to this debate by looking at the interaction of caste and wealth in school choice. We show that too rich and too poor parents behave in the same way irrespective of their caste identities—rich parents sending their children to private schools while poor parents choosing public schools for their children. The caste identity, we find, plays a role for the school choice decision made by the parents belonging to the economic middle class. Among the economic middle class parents, the ones from the privileged castes send their children to private schools, while the children of the parents from the disadvantaged castes are sent to public schools. The result is robust to alternative definitions of privileged and disadvantaged castes. For school quality choice, however, we find a monotonic relationship between wealth and school quality. © 2020 John Wiley &amp; Sons Ltd

Identity and Learning: a study on the effect of student-teacher gender matching on learning outcomes

Vertical fiscal imbalance (VFI) is defined as the share of sub-national governments’ own spending not financed through own revenues. Theoretical and empirical literatures on VFIs have identified them as an obstacle to sub-national accountability and good fiscal performance. India is a decentralized economy where a marked distinction is made between the spending and revenue responsibilities between the Centre and states. However, spending decentralization has not always complemented revenue devolution, giving rise to huge VFIs in the states. This paper attempts empirically to examine the relation between VFI and fiscal performance for Indian states. It provides stylized facts on size, financing and long-run trend of VFI for 24 major Indian states. Panel data estimation for all those states, covering the period 1995-96 to 2014-15, reveals that on an average the primary deficit of the state governments decline by 15 percentage point of Net State Domestic Product (NSDP) for each percentage point decline in VFI. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2019, corrected publication 2019.

Vertical fiscal imbalances and its impact on fiscal performance: A case for indian states

The recent exchange rate fluctuations in India have been a matter of concern for the policymakers and general public. The current exchange rate regime in India, known as managed float, has evolved through a long process of searching for an appropriate policy regime for India. Since exchange rates are relative prices of two currencies it is generally affected by the relative productivity differential and real wage rates in the long-run. However, the bubbles arising out of speculation plays a major role in determining the exchange rates in the short-run. The present scenario about the exchange rate fluctuations in India has been caused to a large extent by the deteriorating current account balance and the adverse expectations associated with it. However, the question of intervention by the government in the exchange rate market should be decided on the basis of the impact of such exchange rate fluctuations on the real effective exchange rate and the possible effects on the employment situation in the country. © 2013 Indian Institute of Foreign Trade.

Financial crises, in one form or the other, have been ravaging the world economy from time to time. The great depression of 1929 was perhaps the most significant financial crisis in the economic history of the world in terms of its geographical spread and deep impact. Commentators are unanimous at crediting the global financial crisis of 2008 as the second-most significant crisis (Hall 2010). In between several crises of smaller dimension-like Mexican crisis, Latin American debt crisis and Asian crisis have frequented us. All these crises had played havoc with the rhythm of economic lives of the people of the affected countries. Global financial crisis: What did we know, what have we learnt?

In the wake of deregulation of prices of some petroleum products, we estimate the pass-through impact of international oil prices on the Indian economy. In contrast to global trends, we find evidence of higher pass-through to domestic inflation and industrial output, particularly since 2002 when domestic prices started to adjust more frequently to international oil prices. We also simulate to obtain the potential full pass-through impact if prices were completely deregulated and find that such a pricing strategy could result in significant upsurge of inflation with consequential effect on output. On the other hand, staggered adjustments would deteriorate government finances. © 2012 Society for Policy Modeling.
