Malnutrition is a global phenomenon in general and India is no exception. Present study was conducted to determine the prevalence of undernutrition among the Santal children of Ajodhya Gram Panchayat of Purulia district of West Bengal, India. Here, quality of life of the households of the studied research participants is also investigated to understand the role of quality of life in the prevalence of undernutrition. A total number of 307 children aged in between 5–10 years were evaluated using the standard anthropometric techniques, such as height-for-age, weight-for-age and body mass index for-age to determine the prevalence of stunting, wasting and underweight conditions of the Santal tribal children. The nutritional status index of children and the quality of life index of those children’s households have also been calculated to perceive the relation between these two indices. A cluster analysis has also been performed to see the similarity in terms of nutritional level among the children across the mouzas of Ajodhya Gram Panchayat. The prevalence of stunting, wasting and underweight among the children is found to be 27.69%, 36.81% and 44.63% respectively. The overall prevalence of undernutrition is recorded 58.31%. The nutritional status index is calculated to be 0.488 (moderate) for children, while the quality of life index for households is computed as 0.199 (very poor). The study reveals the occurrence of undernutrition among children is closely associated with poor quality of life of households of Ajodhya. The chi-square tests indicate that no statistically significant variation (p < 0.05) in the prevalence of undernutrition in between male and female children, and among the different age groups is observed. © 2021, Korean Spatial Information Society.

Application of AHP for groundwater potential zones mapping in plateau fringe terrain: Study from western province of West Bengal

In the era of twenty-first century, the endless demands of human have promoted land use land cover (LULC) change, and its understanding is more essential for proper management and future planning towards the sustainable development. An analysis of LULC is made for the Baghmundi Community Development (C.D.) Block of Purulia district of West Bengal, India to observe the changes over time. The Landsat images of 1972, 1992, 1999, 2009 and 2019 are taken to prepare the LULC maps using RS and GIS techniques. Moreover, the Markov chain model is computed to estimate LULC change of 2039. Thematic maps of different years show several changes in LULC. An accuracy assessment of the classifications of LULC of the years 1999, 2009 and 2019 is calculated as 81.32%, 81.36% and 80.16% respectively. The kappa coefficient is also computed for the same years to understand the level of agreement between classified LULC type and ground level LULC type. The values of kappa coefficient are 0.76 for 1999, 0.77 for 2009 and 0.75 for 2019. Within the time frame of 1972 to 2019, the vegetation cover declined to 44.79 km2, while the built-up area increased to 40.21 km2. Based on the predicted model, the vegetation cover may lose 33.60 km2 in 2039 from the year 2019, and it may mainly be acquired by the agricultural land (21.94 km2) and built-up area (7.93 km2). © 2020, Società Italiana di Fotogrammetria e Topografia (SIFET).

Evaluating the rate of change and predicting the future scenario of spatial pattern using Markov chain model: a study from Baghmundi C.D. Block of Purulia district, West Bengal

Abstract: The Ajay is an ephemeral, monsoon influenced river, originated from the Chhotanagpur plateau at Batpar of Jamui, Bihar, flowing through heterogeneous lithology and merge with the river Bhagirathi in West Bengal. Here, an attempt has been made to study the directional relationship between paleo-flow and the present flow direction of the Ajay river in West Bengal. Paleocurrent data help to reconstruct the details of paleo-fluvial system, especially the sedimentary environment of the past. The present work was carried out on the basis of detailed field work at different river segments. In this work, paleo-directional data were obtained from the primary sedimentary structure. Present flow direction data were collected using floats, microform developed on active channel bed and also from sediment grain orientation. By using collected directional data, vector mean of paleo and present flow direction were computed. Analytical results reveal that difference is minimum between present and paleo flow direction in studied segments. The directional relationship between the paleo and the present flow direction was divergent in two segments, convergent in four segments and parallel in three segments. The results help us to understand the sedimentary environment and changing flow regimes of the studied segments. Research highlights: Present and paleo-flow directions of the river are analyzed using vector resultant method.Minimum difference found between present and paleo flow direction of the studied river segments.Sediment successions of the river revealed periodic change in flow character and sediment supply.Natural and anthropogenic factors combinedly affect the flow pattern and sedimentary environment. © 2021, Indian Academy of Sciences.

Analysis of current direction in a tropical fluvial system: A study of Ajay river basin within West Bengal, India

Identification of groundwater potential zones needs an understanding of different hydro-geological parameters of the concerned region. This present study done on Gandheswari watershed of West Bengal is mainly based on RS and GS techniques. Seven important parameters are taken into consideration namely geology, lineament, slope, drainage, soil, rainfall, and land use and land cover which are mutually interdependent to each other in the groundwater development process. Satellite image of Landsat-8, SRTM-DEM of USGS, rainfall data of IMD, topographical sheets of SOI, geological map of GSI, soil map of NBSS&amp;LUP are collected and processed as per requirements in the ArcGIS, Erdas Imagine and PCI Geometica software to create or extract layers for all the parameters. The MIF technique is applied to assign weight to each parameter based on its level of influence to other parameters. All the layers are now integrated together adopting weighted overlay method in ArcGIS software. The prepared final map shows the groundwater potential zones of the Gandheswari watershed. An accuracy assessment is done based on groundwater fluctuation data of last 10 years (2018–2009) from CGWB calculating Kappa co-efficient to validate the study. The study reveals that an area of 275.9 km2 (69.86%) is found to be good prospect of groundwater. The overall accuracy level of the study is calculated to be 84.62%, while the result of the Kappa co-efficient is 88% for the same. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

The upper Kangsabati river basin is situated on the extended part of ‘Chhotanagpur Granitic or Granite Gneiss Complex’ (CGGC) of West Bengal and Jharkhand. People of this hard rock terrain suffer severely from water scarcity during scorching summer. To delineate groundwater potential zones of the study region, seven hydro-geological factors, such as geology, lineament, slope, drainage, rainfall, soil and land use land cover are considered. The Cartosat-1 DEM of IRS, LISS-3 image of IRS, geological map of GSI, soil map of NBSS&amp;LUP and rainfall data of CWC are arranged and processed in ArcGIS, Erdas Imagine and PCI Geometica softwares as per requirements to prepare seven individual thematic layers. To assign proper weight of an individual factor based on its level of influence in the occurrence of groundwater, the AHP model is adopted to serve the purpose. Finally, the map of the groundwater potential zones is produced by integrating all the seven layers into one in ArcGIS software. The map of groundwater potential zones of the upper Kangsabati river basin shows that an area of 1819.45 km2 (53.33%) is of good to very good potentiality of groundwater. Only an area of 591.23 km2 (17.34%) is identified as very poor to poor zones of groundwater prospect. The verification of the study is also done by computing an accuracy assessment. The result of the overall accuracy assessment of the study is recorded to be 79.77%, while the Kappa co-efficient is calculated to be 0.73. © 2020 Elsevier B.V.

Spatial Analysis of Health Care Facility: A Block Level Study in Purulia District, West Bengal

The river network analysis using thermodynamic entropy approach has been studied over the past several decades to decipher the behaviour of streams and landscape stability. The entropy-based study has been taken up in Kunur River Basin of eastern India to verify the level of adjustment for its present longitudinal profile to the calculated and equilibrium longitudinal profiles adopting Yang's (1971) theory of average river fall. The verification reveals that the fall ratio is less than 1, which indicates the basin has not yet reached the dynamic equilibrium phase and the whole process-response system sustains tremendous human pressure. It is inferred from the thermodynamic river profiles that there is poor agreement between observed data and the law of average stream fall, and the concave river profile emerging from several scales of process-form interaction is characterized by human interference. The present analyses also demonstrate that the lithological control, grain size and channel morphology influence the gradient in short term and climate-induced hydrological changes control the long-term stability of the total landscape.
