University of Calcutta (informally known as Calcutta University or CU) is a collegiate public state university located in Kolkata, West Bengal, India.&nbsp;Within India it is recognized as a &quot;Five-Star University&quot; and accredited &quot;A&quot; Grade by National Assessment and Accreditation Council.

The University of Calcutta has secured the Fifth position among the Universities of India in the prestigious &quot;Indian University Ranking 2019&quot; list, released by the NIRF of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India.

It was established on 24 January 1857, and was one of the first institutions in Asia to be established as a multidisciplinary and Western-style university. Its alumni and faculty include several heads of state, heads of government, social reformers, prominent artists, only academy award winner and Dirac medal winner in India, many Fellows of the Royal Society and five Nobel laureates as of 2019 which is highest in South Asia.

In 1970, Howard proposed a fifth type of nodal anatomy pattern, where a single vascular trace from the stele is associated with more than one leaf and termed it as "split-lateral". Several workers observed this type of nodal vascular trace in different angiosperm families, but with rather conflicting interpretations. The present study added another family - Euphorbiaceae - in the list of such nodal type and, based on the observation of different nodal configurations of the species Mallotus nudiflorus (L.) Gentiana springateana D.Maity sp. nov. (Gentianaceae) is described from the Sikkim Himalaya and placed in G. section Phyllocalyx (Kusn.) T.N.Ho. Taxonomic circumscription of Rivina humilis L. is re-examined and R. bengalensis S.C.Srivast. & T.K. Paul is treated as a synonym. Rivina humilis var. bracteata is proposed as a new variety.

A new variety of Rivina humilis and the status of R. bengalensis (Phytolaccaceae)

The presence of 10 types of normal stomata along with 4 subtypes, one intermediate type between stephanocytic and hemiparacytic and some abnormal stomatal structures both in the vegetative and floral organs of Canella winterena (L.) Geartn. (Canellaceae) is reported here. The epidermal cells are polygonal, isodiametric in surface view with straight anticlinal walls. The stomata are amphibrachyparacytic, anomocytic, anisocytic, brachyparacytic, brachyparatetracytic, cyclocytic, hemiparacytic, laterocytic, holoparacytic, stephanocytic, one intermediate type between stephanocytic and hemiparacytic, etc. Abnormalities like contiguous stomata, different types of twin stomata and cytoplasmic bridge between adjacent stomata, stomata with single guard cell, single guard cell with pore juxtaposed with normal stoma are also found. Structure of Polymorphic Stomata in Canella winterena (L.) Geartn. (Canellaceae)

Cassiope fastigiata (Wall.) D. Don subsp. sennikovii D. Maity, subsp. nov. (Ericaceae) is described from Sikkim Himalaya. It differs from the previously known typical Cassiope fastigiata (Wall.) D. Don subsp. fastigiata by its funnel-shaped or narrowly campanulate corolla and larger corolla lobes, sepals, stamens and anther awns. This new taxon is described and illustrated. PCA (Principal Component Analysis) and UPGMA (unweighted pair-group method with arithmetic averages) cluster analysis are used to test the identity of Cassiope taxa found in this region. © 2014 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Taxonomic status of Gymnadenia orchidis LINDL. var. pantlingii RENZ (Orchidaceae)

Myrmechis bakhimensis D. Maity, N. Pradhan & G. G. Maiti (Orchidaceae), a new species from Sikkim Himalaya, is described and illustrated. The new species most closely resembles M. japonica (Reichb.) Rolfe and M. chinensis Rolfe with similar shape and size of lamina and the "T"-shaped epichile, but differs by the perfectly glabrous and eciliate floral bract, 5-nerved dorsal sepal, and emarginate, mucronate epichile.
