University of Calcutta (informally known as Calcutta University or CU) is a collegiate public state university located in Kolkata, West Bengal, India.&nbsp;Within India it is recognized as a &quot;Five-Star University&quot; and accredited &quot;A&quot; Grade by National Assessment and Accreditation Council.

It was established on 24 January 1857, and was one of the first institutions in Asia to be established as a multidisciplinary and Western-style university. Its alumni and faculty include several heads of state, heads of government, social reformers, prominent artists, only academy award winner and Dirac medal winner in India, many Fellows of the Royal Society and five Nobel laureates as of 2019 which is highest in South Asia.

The postcolonial critique of economic dualism and its politics

This article looks into a particular philosophical problem that haunts both Sociology and Marxism, and where D P Mukerji's perspective may be seen as relevant. There has been much ado in sociology over the debate between hermeneutic and positivist approaches. Drawing insights from D P Mukerji, we see his intervention as an attempt to find a way out of this impasse through a distinct rendition of the Marxian dialectic, which is seen as open rather than closed. His rendition combines three principles: taking sides, dynamics of the objective human reality, and most truthful to the wholeness. This unique rendition, D P Mukerji argues, is apt for addressing the philosophical problem of sociology in the context of the specificity of Indian history.

The sociological imagination of Dhurjati Prasad Mukerji: Beyond hermeneutics and positivism

This article discusses a possible dialogue between Marxism and psychotherapy based on the letters between Louis Althusser and Jacques Lacan, exchanged between 1963 and 1969. This dialogue forms the ground for a dialogue between what has come to be known as the "critical tradition" and the "clinical tradition" which, in turn, becomes the ground for imagining what could be called "psycho-social studies". From the letters, this article explores three thematic angles: the angle of the "old" as Foucauldian askesis; the angle of the "beyond" as Marxian/Freudian theoretical form, or, put another way, the angle of the "break" as internal transition from ideology to science; and the angle of the "forbidden" as the Lacanian Real. In doing so, the article reflects on how these three angles could create conditions and conduits for a dialogue between post-metaphysical understandings of Marxism and psychotherapy. © 2015 John Wiley &amp; Sons, Ltd.

Class and need: Social surplus and Marxian theorization of development

This chapter looks at the political economy of mental health in the context of the transition of the Indian state from 'welfare medicine' to 'developmental medicine' to 'neo-liberal medicine' and the transition of the 'discourse on unreason' from unreason being seen as primarily a 'moral problem' to primarily a 'political problem' (where unreason is threat to both self and society) to primarily an 'economic problem' (where unreason leads to loss of productivity and efficiency). The chapter also sees how the political economy of mental health remains torn between 'incitement to discourse' around questions of mental health within the expanding 'circuits of global capital' and acute lack of resources, stigmatization, and ghettoization of unreason outside the circuits. The chapter works at the overdetermination of the axes of the 'patient' (which includes experience and suffering), the 'professional' (which includes listening, diagnosis, cure, care, and medical education), the 'service provider' (which includes public institutions with tertiary, secondary, and primary care delivery systems as also private clinics), and 'industry' (which includes, on the one hand, circuits of global capital and global markets and, on the other, circuits of local capital and local markets). © 2013 Springer India. The political economy of mental health in India

In this chapter, we argue that the rationale for the existence of the Indian state has undergone a fundamental displacement since the adoption of the New Economic Policy (NEP henceforth). This displacement is in alignment with the re-articulation of the Indian economic cartograph into the mutually constitutive triad of neo-liberalism, global capitalism and inclusive development that form the Order of Things (a la Foucault) at present. India's economic transition now must take this historical conjecture as its point of reference and departure. In this regard, the theory of the Indian state must contend with (i) why and how it helped create this triad, (ii) what this triad entailed for its own existence, and (iii) how the state encounters and negotiates with new-fangled contradictions emanating from the triad and thereby transforms itself or gets transformed in the process. State as a transformative entity must thus be understood in relation to the new Order of Things in whose creation it plays a central role and which in turn affects it. There is one important thread that runs through the changes that has materialized with respect to Indian state in the last two decades: the rationale for the existence of Indian state has changed which implies in turn a different philosophy of governance. © 2013 Springer India. Rethinking and theorizing the Indian state in the context of new economic map

Revisiting, from a Marxist perspective, the World Bank's discourse on Social Funds, we highlight three findings. One, Social Funds gets deployed in the context of a larger Third Worldist discourse of poverty management, which in turn helps deepen the logic of capitalist development. Two, generating a class-focused understanding of Social Funds (via the concept of social surplus), we argue that class processes and need processes constitute one another and through this conduit emerges a relation between global capital and the poverty alleviation programme of Social Funds. Lastly, interrogating the management approach underlying Social Funds leads us to question claims of decentralisation and participation. Our analysis exposes an underlying process of subjectification by way of a control mechanism exercised through the code of conduct encapsulated in that managerial approach. © The Author 2013. Rethinking the falling rate of profit and the crisis of capitalism

This paper examines nationalism as the 'modern idea of a collective' or the 'ideal of a modern collective' that struts out universally and that ceaselessly tightens its footwear in the face of recalcitrant gravels, gravels that are representative of either extant or possible ideas of alternative collectivity. Against this background, we show how a new nationalism in India encapsulated by the economic Utopia of 'inclusive development' is emerging in the contemporary landscape of global capitalism under neoliberal conditions. This Utopia is shown to be marked by a fundamental split that helps secure and facilitate the reorganization of India's national cartography into the 'expanding circuits of global capital' and its constitutive outside: 'world of the third'. The faltering miracle story of India and neoliberalism

This paper makes two related contributions. First, the dual economic structure underlying development is shown as producing a distinct conception of other comprising of a devalued third world which is foregrounded and world of the third which is excluded. This dyad of inclusion-exclusion of other is produced in relation to the centers of capitalism and modernism. The category of third world helps to displace the language-experience-logic-ethos of the other a la world of the third such that development works over and transforms world of the third, but via the trope of a devalued third world. We then use this framework to explore the relation of global capitalism with world of the third in the Indian context, a relation that is shown to be two fold. There is on one hand an attempt to dismantle world of the third as part of the development trope of overcoming the third world. On the other, through inclusive development, an attempt is made to directly intervene in the economy of world of the third so as to address the problems of income inequality and social exclusion, again under the trope of uplifting the devalued third world.

Faced with the assault of neoliberal globalization and internecine struggle, the Indian communist movement is shown to be facing a series of inherent contradictions and an identity crisis that has dented its influence and stifled its growth. World of the Third and Global Capitalism

Using class-focused Marxist theory we examine the received category of the informal sector in order to demonstrate two results. First, we explicate the process of 'making' the informal sector in terms of the formal sector. Derived from a centrist logic that shapes the mainstream development paradigm, this involves a process of its devaluation in terms of the norm of the formal sector. Moreover, attempts to introduce heterogeneity within an already homogeneously defined informal sector are shown to be failing. Second, we show how placing the concept of the informal sector within the non-centric class-focused economic terrain fundamentally displaces, indeed 'unmakes', the received definition of the informal sector. Our analytical frame of a non-centric class-focused economic terrain reveals, on one hand, how the 'making' of the informal sector serves as a political rationale for shaping societal transition in favor of modern capitalism, and on the other, the problematical nature of the rationality. © The Author(s), 2010.

The making and unmaking of the (in)formal sector

Banking sector loans are the principal source of capital for small and medium business ventures in India, comprising firms that are not large enough to be registered with stock exchanges. Non-performing assets (NPAs) are an important measure of the success of these businesses, as well as of their levels of discretion in carrying out their commercial activities conditional on their role in developing India's entrepreneurship outside the stock markets. In this article we analyze certain properties of NPAs in Indian Banks over the 1990s, when liberalization was introduced by opening up a significant portion of the public sector, allowing private banks to do business. We arrive at three conclusions for emerging India's banking sector. First, NPAs (as a ratio of loans and advances) are significantly sticky over time. Second, larger NPAs are associated with larger advances and vice-versa. Third, NPAs do not seem to have spiraled out of control over the 1990s. A simple cointegration test is carried out and a set of dynamic graphs, using notions of fibration, is presented to support the results. © 2010 Macmillan Publishers Ltd.
