Triterpene constituents and antibacterial activity of the stems of Reissantia grahamii

Abstract
The stems of the medicinal plant Reissantia grahamii has furnished a new triterpenoid designated reissantiadiol (1) together with friedelin, pachysandiol-A, canophyllol, endodesmiadiol (2) and abruslactone-A (3). Structures 1, 2 and 3 were established from extensive 1D and 2D NMR studies. Preliminary antibacterial activity studies on crude ethyl acetate extract of defatted stems showed strong activity against bacterial strains Escherichia coli strain V (Verotoxigenic E. coli), Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Vibrio cholerae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
