Synthesis and characterization of bio-active glass-ceramics using nano-silica

Abstract
Bio-active glass-ceramics (BGC) has vast applications in medical science. This paper reports bio-active glassceramics synthesis using nano-silica by melt-quench technique. The obtained BGC samples were characterized and analyzed differential thermal analysis (TG/DTA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) for crystallization kinetics, composition, surface morphology, crystallinity. With addition of nano-silica the crystallization peak temperature (Tp) increases, activation energy (E) and Avrami parameter (n) changes slightly. Two dimensional crystal growths occur for the glassceramics. The XRD analysis reveals that the main crystalline phase is fluorapatite. © 2016 American Scientific Publishers All rights reserved.
