Static solutions to the Yang-Mills equations in the presence of external sources are considered. It is shown that in many interesting situations equal energy is carried by related chromoelectric and chromomagnetic modes. A simple relationship is found between the total energies carried by the different modes and the energy of the corresponding abelian Coulomb solution. The axially symmetric situation is considered in some detail. In the case of SU(2), a new class of solutions is presented. It is shown that any axially symmetric SU(3) solution can be expressed in terms of some SU(2) solution. Generalizations to SU(n) are indicated. © 1982 The American Physical Society.
