Polychromatic optical transfer function of a perfect lens masked by birefringent plates

We study the intensity point spread function (IPSF) of a uniaxial birefringent lens sandwiched between two linear polarizers under broadband illumination having flat-top spectral profile. The optic axis of the birefringent crystal is perpendicular to the lens axis. For monochromatic input illumination, a low-power birefringent lens offers enhanced resolution under parallel-polarizers configuration and apodization under crossed-polarizers configuration with a single focus as well. At a relatively high value of birefringence parameter, the proposed system behaves as a double-focus lens. The present communication uses a novel technique to study the effect of polychromatic illumination on the imaging characteristics of birefringent lenses. The studies reveal that the imaging characteristics of the low-power birefrigent lens does not deteriorate considerably under polychromatic illumination. However, for a polychromatic beam with large bandwidth, the imaging behavior of the system having high birefringence parameter deviates appreciably from that under strictly monochromatic illumination. The said system even loses its inherent bi-focal nature due to depolarization of polarized polychromatic light upon passage through the birefringent crystal. © 2011 Elsevier GmbH.

Polychromatic intensity point spread function of a birefringent lens

This report forms a part of the systematic investigation on the imaging behaviour of an optical system consisting of a lens made of a uniaxial birefringent crystal sandwiched between two linear polarizers into which primary spherical aberration is introduced. The optic axis of the birefringent crystal is perpendicular to the lens axis. The proposed system is illuminated with a polychromatic beam of light, the spectral profile of which is considered to be uniform for all wavelengths. The axial irradiance distribution function and the intensity point spread function are used as the image assessment parameters. Some specific cases are computed and illustrated graphically. The study reveals that if the variation of the birefringent parameters of the device with wavelength is less, a larger bandwidth may be used without considerably deviating from the imaging characteristics under strictly monochromatic illumination suffering from similar primary spherical aberration. © Optical Society of India 2011.

The effect of broadband illumination on the imaging characteristics of a birefringent lens suffering from primary spherical aberration

The optical frequency response of a perfect lens partially masked by a retarder has been studied . The optical transfer function (OTF) of such a system depends upon the relative orientation of the analyser, placed at the output, relative to the slow and fast axes of the mask, and also on the relative aportioning of the lens aperture by the mask . The OTF of the system also depends upon the retardation introduced by the mask . In the present paper, we have computed the OTF of the masked lens for different values of the relevent parameters with and without the analyser at the output. © 1987 Journal Of Modern Optics. Frequency response characteristics of a perfect lens partially masked by a retarder

The degree of polarization of a polarized polychromatic beam decreases during the passage of the beam through an optically active medium. In a previous paper [ B. Chakraborty and A. K. Chakraborty, J. Phys. D 18, 145 (1985)], this depolarizing effect in the case of a linearly polarized polychromatic beam having a flat-topped spectral profile was studied. In the present paper the effect of propagation of an elliptically polarized polychromatic beam having a Gaussian spectral profile through an optically active medium is studied. The results of the previous paper can be obtained as a particular case of this generalized study. © 1986 Optical Society of America.

Depolarizing effect of propagation of a polarized polychromatic beam through an optically active medium: A generalized study

The different zones of the lens aperture of a perfect lens are masked by polarization devices. The central circular zone of the lens aperture is masked by one polarizer, and the outer annular zone is masked by another polarizer. These two polarizers are at two different orientations. An analyzer is placed at the output side. It is seen that the optical transfer function (OTF) of such a system depends on the state of polarization of the input beam, the orientation of the analyzer placed at the output side, the radius of the central-circular-zone mask, and the orientation of the masks. In this paper, variation of the OTF of such a system with the orientation of the outer-annular-zone mask is studied. © 1985 Optical Society of America.

Effect of polarizers used as masks on the perfect-lens aperture

The optical transfer function (OTF) of a perfect lens with zonal masking of the lens aperture with polarisation devices has been studied. It is seen that the OTF of such system can be varied continuously by varying state of polarisation of the input beam and also by changing the orientation of the analyser placed at the output side.
