Abstract
This paper is the continuation of our work on the characteristics of monolithic refractories containing calcium aluminate-coated graphites. As-received (uncoated) and coated graphites are compared in terms of X-ray diffraction and differential thermal analysis. High alumina castables containing these graphites are characterized by microstructural studies and the evolution of several phases at different temperatures. The physical properties, namely bulk density, apparent porosity, cold crushing strength and strength after thermal shocks are compared. Performance of the refractory containing coated graphite superseded the other refractory containing an equal amount of uncoated graphite. Sol- gel coating played a pivotal role in sustaining graphite in the harsh environment and developing an intimate contact between the castable matrix and aggregates. © 2013 Expert Fachmedien GmbH.
