Performance evaluation of an amputee-prosthesis system in below-knee amputees

To study the oxygen uptake capacity, the arm crank ergometer test was administered at three different loads, 25, 37-5 and 50 W, on seven severely disabled subjects, and their cardiorespiratory responses were compared to that of nine normal subjects (work loads, 25, 50 and 75 W). Values of V0 2 of the disabled subjects corresponding to heart rates of 150 and 180 beats min -1 were significantly lower than those of the normal subjects, when expressed in 1 min -1 but disappear when the results are expressed in ml kg min -1 . The observations indicate a reduced work capacity and a capacity for increasing the stroke volume of the disabled subjects. © 1984 Taylor &amp; Francis Group, LLC.

Aerobic capacity of severely disabled indians

This study was undertaken to assess the effects of certain common modes of load carrying by hand in the BK amputee-PTB prosthesis system. The energy costs of a test group consisting of BK amputees using PTB prostheses werecompared to those of a control group made up of normal able-bodied individuals and the difference between the two groups was observed to be more marked when walking was performed on the level with load in one hand only in comparison with the both-hand carrying conditions. Single handed load carrying by either hand did not seem to make any observable difference. Stair ascending with equal load in both hands did not produce any appreciable difference between the two groups. Indications were obtained that the BK amputee with a PTB prosthesis system is capable of performing industrial tasks of "moderate" grade. © 1977 Informa UK Ltd All rights reserved: reproduction in whole or part not permitted.

Studies in load carrying in BK amputees with a PTB prosthesis system

The performances of a group of unilateral above-knee amputees using prostheses with quadrilateral sockets of the ischial-bearing type were evaluated economically by subjecting them to a battery of tests representing the commonest activities of daily living and working. The Test Group also included an isolated case of an above-knee amputee wearing a prosthesis with a ’ plug-fit ’ type socket. During each test, the oxygen consumption, pulmonary ventilation, energy expenditure and peak heart rate were measured for each subject. To assess the degree of normality restored, performances of the Test Group subjects were compared with those of a Control Group consisting of sixteen normal, healthy, adult males of sedentary habits. Although the weight-bearing ability of the above-knee prosthetic rehabilitees was found to have been fully restored, restoration of the other major quality of the lower extremity, namely freedom of movement, was observed to depend largely on the regularity and length of use of the prosthesis. It was confirmed that with a regular and long period of use, a high degree of amputee-prosthesis integration is possible, even with a not over-sophisticated and reasonably acceptable mode of construction. The evaluation brought out the shortcomings of some of the Test Group subjects. Nevertheless, it established that such above-knee prosthetic rehabilitees should not have any difficulty in leading a normal domestic life and also in carrying out the tasks pertaining to industrial occupations of up to moderately heavy grade. © 1974 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

Ergonomics evaluation of above-knee amputee-prosthesis combinations

In view of the widespread use of the axillary crutches as a temporary ambulatory device, and in some cases almost as a permanent rehabilitative measure, an objective evaluation of the performance level of leg amputees using axillary crutches was undertaken. Ten unilateral leg amputees constituting the test group were made to perform sitting, standing, level walking and stair ascending activities during which their energy expenditures, oxygen consumption, pulmonary ventilations and peak heart rates were measured by standard physiological procedures. The test group results were compared with the corresponding results of a control group, made-up of sixteen adult, healthy, able-bodied persons having sedentary habits. The metabolic costs of using axillary crutches were found to be unusually high in comparison with the normal standards: t tests performed clearly indicated the differences existing between the two groups for most of the test activities. The extra energy and effort required by the crutch-using unilateral amputee for the performance of standard activities of daily living and working contra-indicated the permanent use of axillary crutches. For temporary use also, the period of use should be reduced to the minimum. The information generated by this study may be used for comparison with the performance standards of other alternative handicapped-appliance systems and will be of value in the treatment, training and reablement assessment of the lower extremity handicapped. © 1974 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
