Kuepferia kanchii D. Maity, Sentu K. Dey & Adr. Favre, a new species from Sikkim Himalaya, is described and illustrated. It differs from its close relative K. infelix (C. B. Clarke) Adr. Favre (= Gentiana infelix C. B. Clarke) by having sessile and smaller flowers, and smaller floral parts. Kuepferia kanchii is further characterized by a white corolla with bluish green patches on the outside at the base of each corolla lobe, and a corolla tube flushed with light green inside towards the base, blue filaments, sessile stigma, smaller capsule, and trigonous–elongated, ca 0.8 mm long and curved seeds. © 2016 The Authors

The taxonomy of Cecil Marquand's ‘remarkable little plant’ Gentiana vernayi C. Marquand (Microsperma–Gentianaceae) is revised. A new subspecies, G. vernayi C. Marquand subsp. favrei S. K. Dey & D. Maity subsp. nov. is described and illustrated from Sikkim Himalaya. The new taxon is strikingly distinct from G. vernayi subsp. vernayi by its mostly elliptic, acute leaves, and bright white flowers with comparatively small floral parts. Moreover, the basal part of the ovary is symmetric and the ovarian stipe is longer. In addition, in the new taxon the calyx lobes are sometimes six. Information on the habitat, phenology, distribution and conservation status of both taxa is provided. Gentiana vernayi C. Marquand was described by Cecil Marquand based on specimens collected from southern Tibet. Both subspecies are here reported from India for the first time and constitutes an extension of the species known range to the Sikkim Himalaya, India. The sympatric nature of both the taxa is discussed. The asymmetrical plicae in G. vernayi and members of the genus Kuepferia Adr.Favre are assumed to be a morphological convergence. © 2016 The Authors

Taxonomy of the â€˜remarkable little plantâ€™ Gentiana vernayi (Microspermaâ€“Gentianaceae)

Populations of an unknown taxon of Lomatogonium A. Braun have been found during floristic surveys in the alpine pasture of north Sikkim, India. Comparison with morphologically similar taxa (Lomatogonium stapfii (Burkill) Harry Smith and L. longifolium Harry Smith) revealed that the new populations represent a species new to science, which is described as L. cherukurianum. Data on phenology, ecology and distribution of the new species is provided together with illustrations. © 2016 The Authors
