Abstract
Study on distribution of the pestiferous slug Laevicaulis alte (Ferussac) in West Bengal during the period 1985-86 revealed that except hilly tracts of Darjeeling, the most drier parts of Jhargram subdivision of Midnapore, parts of Purulia, Bankura and Birbhum districts the slugs are common inhabitants of almost all the kitchen and flower gardens, as-well-as the areas dominated by wild plants. The pattern of distribution is influenced by abiotic and biotic factors, of which soil, vegetation, temperature, humidity, rainfall, natural enemies are important. The density of L. alte population recorded highest (48-62 per square meter) in the districts of 24-Parganas, Howrah, Coochbehar and Jalpaiguri while the same ranged between 20-35 per square meter area in remaining districts.
