Dehydration-rehydration study of bauxite rock carries a great practical significance in preparing different alumina products, predicting the structure-property relationship of the high alumina bearing ore for its effective utilization and controlling the drying-firing schedule of bauxite based various alumina ceramics. This paper presents a comprehensive thermal dehydration-rehydration behaviour of the naturally occurring bauxite rock of India in powder form in relation to variation of temperature of thermal treatment and relative humidity of the environment.

The present investigation on the effect of Y2O3 towards the sintering behavior of mullite compacts revealed that rapid mullitization occurred through nucleation and normal grain growth due to the formation of yttrious silicate glassy phase. The intergranular voids were progressively eliminated by yttrious silicate glass leading to significant decrease in porosity with the corresponding remarkable rise in mechanical strength of sintered compacts. The uniform dispersion of microfine corundum grains into the mullite matrix with 1.5% Y2O3 content was noticed during sintering at 1550 °C and above. © 2018 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l.

Effect of yttria on sintering and microstructural behavior of reaction sintered mullite based on bauxite, fly ash and precipitated silica

The effect of substituting 0-30 mass-% quartz by technical alumina in an electrical porcelain insulator was studied. The structural and thermomechanical characteristics of siliceous porcelain were examined after industrial firing at 1260 °C. A remarkable improvement was observed in the thermomechanical and microstructural qualities of well-formed electrical porcelain bodies, with the best results occurring for the composition based on 20 mass-% substitution of alumina.
