A new feed to excite a cylindrical dielectric resonator antenna (CDRA) with HEM12δ mode has been conceived and demonstrated in this paper for the first time. This uses an aperture-fed dielectric resonator as a feed to a CDRA and results in much improved bandwidth along with attractive radiation characteristics. As much as 7.6 dBi peak gain has been documented. This investigation adds a new feeding technique satisfying the boundary condition required for the modal fields and appears as a superior alternative to the earlier feeding techniques. © 2015 IEEE.

A new feed conceived for exciting HEM12δ mode in a cylindrical DRA

A composite aperture has been conceived to excite cylindrical dielectric resonator antenna (CDRA) simultaneously with two different modes, resulting in broadside radiations at two adjacent bands. Threefold objectives of this investigation includes: (i) to realize HEM12δ mode in a practical CDRA without involving any unwanted hybrid mode; (ii) to explore composite aperture type feed, which serves as equivalent magnetic and electric dipoles to launch HEM11δ mode and HEM12δ mode, respectively; and hence (iii) to achieve a dual-mode dualband CDRA without compromising in any enlargement of antenna dimension. HEM12δ mode is a recent introduction by the present authors as a broadside radiating mode in a CDRA, although this investigation demonstrates a practically feasible application for the first time. Systematic study of newly proposed composite aperture is followed by experimental investigation with a set of prototypes operating at S and C bands. As much as 6 dBi gain with 7-8% matching bandwidth for each operating band has been experimentally demonstrated. © 2014 IEEE.

Dualband cylindrical dielectric resonator antenna employing HEM11Î´ and HEM12Î´ modes excited by new composite aperture

Higher-order {\rm HEM}12 \deltamode has been experimentally realized in a cylindrical dielectric resonator antenna (CDRA) very recently revealing broadside radiation like the dominant {\rm HEM}11 \deltamode. The primary challenge is the excitation of the mode in a practical DRA sitting on a metal ground plane, which was first resolved by introducing a floating feed as an equivalent current ribbon. In this letter, yet another technique has been explored using a conventional probe-fed CDRA placed on a metal plate. Only a new trough-shaped air cavity has been introduced in the ground plane just beneath the DRA to simulate a special boundary condition, which enunciates desired modal fields. Such a technique may be improvised for other potential applications. The proposed concept has been verified using both simulated and experimental results. © 2002-2011 IEEE.

New technique to excite higher-order radiating mode in a cylindrical dielectric resonator antenna

A resonant mode (HEM 12δ), other than those (HEM 11δ and TM 01δ) conventionally excited and used in a cylindrical dielectric resonator antenna (CDRA) has been examined with a view for using it as another radiating mode with broadside radiation patterns. Excitation of the mode, being the most challenging aspect, has been discussed and resolved by employing an innovative technique. The proposed concept has been successfully verified and experimentally demonstrated for the first time. More than 8-dBi peak gain with excellent broadside radiation has been obtained from a prototype shaped from a commercially available low-loss dielectric material with relative permittivity 10. © 2006 IEEE.
